Writing with Pen

Hello!

As an educator, my greatest interest is helping students who "don't get it" move beyond their difficulties to become empowered learners.  The service I consistently provide to students goes beyond simply tutoring them in skills.

As a Learning Specialist and Educational Therapist, I look deeper into a student's needs to figure out what is preventing success and then target instruction to those areas that impede growth. This is very different from a tutor who targets specific skills but may not go beyond to understand the cause of the difficulty and support the root of the problem.

      Simply put, my job is:

  • to support the whole student,

  • to identify how the student's profile impacts all aspects of learning,

  • to communicate this understanding to the student and parents,

  • to design and implement a plan to promote learning to read, write, do math or succeed with executive function skills.

My Story

I’ve been helping children, teens, and adults break through the obstacles that hold them back from achieving their academic goals for several decades. Before becoming a Learning Specialist and  Educational Therapist, I taught Elementary and Junior High in several private schools. I worked at The Fenn School in Concord MA, a prestigious boy's school, for thirty-eight years. I taught fourth grade, developed and taught a specialized class for students with math difficulties, taught fifth-grade math, was Head of the Lower School for eight years, and served as a Learning Specialist and the Head of Tutoring there for twenty-five years.

In 2013 I joined the staff at an independent school in central MA as their Learning Specialist, serving students in grades K-9.  In 2022 I left this position to design and facilitate a homeschool pod at my farm in Pepperell. It is exciting to be working with students in  personal ways that meet their needs specifically and with parents seeking more for their children other than traditional programs offered in schools.

Through my private tutorial and consulting business, which I began in 2000, I partner with families and individuals eager to advance their skills, seek educational opportunities, and overcome obstacles that might be getting in the way of progress.

I have an undergraduate degree from Regis College in English and Secondary Education and a Master of Arts degree from Regis in Special Education.  I have advanced training in testing, reading, and administrating reading programs.  I believe strongly in ongoing professional growth which keeps me updated regarding new research and strategies which I add to my supersized "toolbox".

My expertise as an Educational Therapist is working with students with various learning challenges, specifically but not limited to students with dyslexia, language-based learning disabilities, dysgraphia and writing challenges, dyscalculia and math challenges, executive function weaknesses, and ADHD.

Further experiences and training have given me knowledge and insight into other areas of education such as homeschooling, teaching test-taking skills and test-taking strategies, and working with ELL students.

These many years working with students of all ages have empowered me to be a passionate advocate for students who struggle and dearly want to turn their obstacles into strengths. The joy I see on my students' faces when they realize their own power to learn motivates me beyond all else to do my best to serve them well.

You can trust your child is in good hands with me and you will see results. Most importantly your child will feel empowered to learn as he or she experiences success and accomplishment.  I welcome you to get in touch with me today to see what I can do for you.
